What to Expect
Every student starts with a no-pressure evaluation lesson. We sit down together — or stand up, if you are a string player — and figure out where you are musically, what you want to accomplish, and how we can get you there. If you have never played before, we talk about what excites you. If you are preparing for an audition, we hear you play and identify exactly what to work on. No commitment, no contract. Just a plan that makes sense for you.
Milton families tend to value substance over shortcuts. That is how we teach — thoughtful, personalized instruction that builds real skill, whether the goal is a school orchestra chair or the simple pleasure of playing music at home.
- Complete beginners welcome — children as young as 4, teens, and adults who have never played
- Advanced & competitive students — GMEA All-State, LGPE, Milton HS and Cambridge HS auditions
- 17 instruments — violin, viola, piano, classical/acoustic/electric/jazz guitar, bass, cello, voice, drums, saxophone, flute, music theory, ear training, songwriting, and improvisation
- Private lessons first — group ensembles open after your instructor confirms readiness
- Flexible scheduling & lesson lengths — tailored to busy Milton family calendars

Who Takes Lessons With Us
Young beginners — There is a moment in every first lesson where something clicks — a child finds the right note, hears the sound they made, and their face changes. That is the moment we are building toward. Our youngest students, starting as early as age 4, learn proper hand position, bow hold, posture, and note-reading through short, patient sessions. When they eventually walk into their first orchestra class at Hopewell Middle or Northwestern Middle, they arrive with confidence and a head start.
School-age & competitive students — Milton High School runs three orchestra ensembles — Concert, Sinfonia, and Chamber — plus Pit Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra for extracurricular performance. The program has performed at the GMEA Conference, the ASTA National Orchestra Festival, the Smoky Mountain Music Festival, and the Georgia State University Orchestra Festival. Milton's Wind Ensemble played to a standing-room-only crowd at the GMEA Conference and earned an invitation to the University of South Carolina Band Clinic. Cambridge High, in its first decade, has built an orchestra of roughly 70 students with members earning GMEA All-State seats. We coach students through every level of this pipeline — from rising ninth-grade placement auditions to state finals.
Adults & returning players — Milton's equestrian trails and Crabapple community attract people who appreciate a slower pace in some parts of their life. Music fits naturally into that. Whether you played in college and want to pick it back up, or you have always been curious about guitar and finally have Saturday mornings free, we design your lessons around what you actually want — no fixed syllabus, no pressure to perform, just the satisfaction of getting better at something you enjoy.

Your Instructor
Soul Music Lessons is led by a multi-instrumentalist who directly teaches violin, viola, piano, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, music theory, and cello. This means your evaluation is conducted by someone who understands how each instrument connects to the others and can guide a student's development over years, not just weeks. Specialist instructors handle voice, drums, saxophone, and flute to the same standard.
Part of Milton's Music Community
Milton sits between Alpharetta's concert stages and Cumming's growing arts scene, with access to both. The Alpharetta Symphony Youth Orchestras rehearse at Preston Ridge Community Center just south of Milton's border. The Forsyth County Arts Alliance supports music programs and community performances to the north. Milton High students regularly participate in the Fulton County Honor Orchestra and Event hosted at neighboring schools. And the Crabapple community hosts seasonal events where local musicians perform for neighbors.
Our students are not just developing technique in a practice room — they are preparing to contribute to a community that values live music.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can children start music lessons?
We accept students as young as 4. Every child is different, and the evaluation lesson helps us determine readiness without pressure or assumptions.
Do I need any experience to start?
Not at all. Many of our students — children and adults alike — walk in never having held an instrument. That is a perfectly fine place to start.
How much do lessons cost?
Pricing depends on lesson length and frequency. We offer flexible options to fit different budgets. Call 470-789-2422 or use our contact form for details.
Are private lessons necessary for GMEA and school auditions?
They are not strictly required, but students who supplement school rehearsals with private lessons consistently place higher. For GMEA All-State and LGPE, private coaching on scales, excerpts, and sight-reading is the difference-maker.
Do you offer group lessons?
Yes, after private evaluation. Group playing builds listening and confidence in ways solo practice cannot — and students who play with peers tend to enjoy music more and stick with it longer.
Do you offer online lessons?
