How online lessons work

Same private 1-on-1 format as in-person lessons. Just delivered through your camera and microphone.

01

You set up your space

A quiet room, your instrument, a tablet or laptop with a built-in camera. That’s it. We help you position the camera so your teacher can see your hands, posture, and instrument clearly.

02

Your teacher joins on Zoom

Click the lesson link at your scheduled time. Your teacher walks you through warm-ups, technique work, and repertoire — same structure as an in-person lesson, fully interactive.

03

You practice between lessons

Your teacher sends sheet music, practice notes, and recordings to your inbox. You log practice progress and bring questions to the next lesson. Most students are performance-ready within their first semester.

Available for every instrument we teach

Online lessons work for every program in our catalog — the only exception is in-person ensemble rehearsals (for obvious reasons).

Don’t see your instrument? Ask us — if we teach it in person, we teach it online.

Who online lessons are for

Local students with a packed schedule

Soccer practice, homework, recital prep — some weeks the drive to the studio just doesn’t fit. Switch to online for any single week, then come back in-person the next. No need to choose.

Anywhere in the United States

If you live outside the Atlanta metro area but want the same instructional quality, online lessons make geography irrelevant. We have students across the country in regular weekly lessons.

International students

Learn from a Suwanee-based instructor whether you’re in Toronto, London, São Paulo, or Tokyo. We work across time zones and adjust lesson windows to fit your local schedule.

What you need

Most students already have everything required. Here’s the short list.

Your instrument

Whatever you’re studying — violin, viola, piano, guitar, voice, drums, etc. For piano students, an acoustic piano or a weighted-key digital keyboard works equally well over video.

A computer or tablet with a camera

Laptop, desktop with a webcam, iPad, or Android tablet. The camera should show your hands and instrument when positioned. Phones can work but the small screen makes following sheet music harder.

A quiet space

A room with minimal background noise. Hard floors and bare walls can echo — rugs, curtains, or even just clothes hanging on a chair help dampen the room.

Stable internet

A reliable Wi-Fi or wired connection. Most home internet handles Zoom audio + video without issues. We recommend testing your connection at fast.com before your first lesson — 5+ Mbps upload is plenty.

Common questions about online music lessons

Is online really as effective as in-person?

For most students, yes. The teacher sees your posture, hands, and instrument the entire time, and audio quality on modern devices is excellent for music. Where in-person genuinely shines is dynamic ensemble work and very young students (under 6) who need physical hand-positioning. For everyone else, online is a real, full-quality lesson.

How long are online lessons?

Same as in-person — typically 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on your level and goals. Beginners usually start with 30-minute weekly lessons; intermediate and advanced students often move to 45 or 60 minutes as repertoire deepens.

Do you teach group classes online?

Private lessons translate beautifully to online. Group ensembles and band rehearsals are in-person only — the latency between players over video makes real-time playing together impractical. If your goal is ensemble work, you’ll want to be in our service area.

What about young children?

For students under 6, in-person is usually a better fit — teachers often need to physically adjust posture or hand position. Ages 6 and up generally do well online, especially with a parent nearby for the first few lessons to help with camera setup.

Can I switch between online and in-person?

Yes. Many local students do hybrid — in-person most weeks, online when something gets in the way. There’s no penalty for switching, and you keep the same teacher.

What does the first online lesson cost?

Your first lesson is a risk-free evaluation. We assess your level, talk through your goals, and you decide whether to continue. No commitment.
