Our Approach
Jazz guitar is one of the most demanding and rewarding styles to study. It requires a deep understanding of harmony, the ability to improvise in real time, and a refined touch that takes years to develop. Our instructors break this journey into manageable steps so every student progresses steadily.
We begin with basic jazz chord shapes and simple standards, gradually introducing improvisation concepts as your harmonic vocabulary grows. A solid foundation in Music Theory is essential — we integrate theory into every jazz lesson so concepts like chord extensions, modes, and voice leading become second nature.
Ear Training is equally critical. Jazz musicians need to hear chord qualities, recognize progressions, and respond to other players in real time. We recommend our free Chord Finder tool for visualizing voicings between lessons.
✦ Private-First Philosophy: All students begin with private evaluation lessons.
🎯 Perfect Complement
Many of our jazz guitar students also study:
- Music Theory — Jazz IS applied theory — this is non-negotiable for jazz guitarists
- Ear Training — Hear chord qualities and respond to changes in real time
- Improvisation — Deepen your improvisational vocabulary across genres

The Long, Rewarding Road
Jazz guitar is not a quick study, and we won’t pretend it is. The chord voicings alone take months to internalize, and building fluent improvisation over jazz harmony is a lifelong pursuit. But that’s exactly what makes it rewarding — there is always something new to discover, always a deeper level to reach.
Our approach starts with manageable goals: learning a few standards, getting comfortable with basic ii-V-I voicings, and improvising over a simple blues. From there, complexity grows organically as your ears and fingers develop together.
Jazz guitar students should strongly consider studying music theory and ear training simultaneously — these aren’t optional extras in jazz, they’re essential tools.
