What to Expect
Every student starts with a no-pressure evaluation lesson — a one-on-one session where we listen to you play (or talk about what you want to learn if you have never played), understand your goals, and match you with the right instructor. There is no commitment, no contract, and no sales pitch. Just an honest conversation about music.
From there we build a curriculum around you — your interests, your pace, your schedule, your budget. A seven-year-old preparing for her first school orchestra sounds different from a dad learning guitar on Saturday mornings, and their lesson plans should reflect that.
- Complete beginners welcome — children as young as 4, teens, and adults with zero experience. Everyone starts somewhere.
- Advanced & competitive students — GMEA All-State prep, seating auditions, youth orchestra auditions
- 17 instruments — violin, viola, piano, classical/acoustic/electric/jazz guitar, bass, cello, voice, drums, saxophone, flute, music theory, ear training, songwriting, and improvisation
- Private lessons first — group ensembles available after your instructor confirms readiness
- Flexible scheduling & lesson lengths — after-school, evenings, and weekends, with lesson durations tailored to the student's age and goals
Families with multiple children studying different instruments can coordinate everything through one studio — one schedule, one relationship, one place that knows your kids by name.

Who Takes Lessons With Us
Young beginners — There is something genuinely special about watching a child hold a violin for the first time and draw out their very first note. Our youngest students — starting as early as age 4 — learn note recognition, rhythm, and proper hand position through short, focused sessions built for their attention span. We are not rushing them toward performance. We are helping them fall in love with music, and building the fundamentals so that when they enter Fulton County's middle school programs, they arrive with confidence instead of confusion.
School-age & competitive students — Whether your child is entering middle school orchestra at Webb Bridge or Haynes Bridge, or preparing for Alpharetta High School's Sinfonia seating audition, private lessons build the technique and musicianship that classroom rehearsal alone cannot. Our instructors know the GMEA audition format, LGPE evaluation criteria, and the repertoire required for programs like the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Alpharetta Symphony Youth Orchestras. We coach three-octave scales, sight-reading fluency, and prepared excerpts — the specifics that separate Superior from Excellent ratings.
Adults & returning players — Many of our students work in the Alpharetta Technology Corridor and come to lessons because they want something in their week that is not a screen. Some are returning to an instrument they set aside in college and are surprised by how quickly it comes back. Others are true beginners — a mom who always wanted to learn piano, a retiree picking up guitar for the first time. There is no age limit on the feeling of playing a song you love all the way through for the first time. Same evaluation-first approach, same personalized curriculum, same respect for your time and your goals.

Your Instructor
Soul Music Lessons is led by a multi-instrumentalist who teaches violin, viola, piano, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, music theory, and cello directly — not through a rotating roster of part-time staff. When you schedule an evaluation, you are meeting the person who will likely teach your lessons, someone who understands how each instrument connects to the others and can guide a student's musical development across years, not just weeks. Specialist instructors handle voice, drums, saxophone, and flute, and they are held to the same standard.
Part of Alpharetta's Music Community
Alpharetta is home to some of Georgia's strongest school music programs. Alpharetta High School runs five orchestras with roughly 150 students in daily string instruction. Students at AHS, Cambridge High, and Northview High regularly earn seats in GMEA All-State ensembles, the Governor's Honors Program, and the Fulton County Honor Orchestra. Webb Bridge Middle School's orchestras have performed at the GMEA In-Service Conference and competed at the ASTA National Orchestra Competition.
Beyond school, the Alpharetta Symphony Youth Orchestras — Youth Orchestra, Youth Wind Orchestra, and Prelude Strings — hold auditions every summer at Preston Ridge Community Center. The Fulton County Youth Orchestra is headquartered here. The Alpharetta Symphony performs a full concert season at Innovation Academy and Union Hill Park. Community stages throughout North Fulton host recitals and festivals year-round. Our students gain the technique and confidence to step onto any of these stages when they are ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can children start music lessons?
We accept students as young as 4. Younger beginners work on note recognition, rhythm, coordination, and proper hand position through short, age-appropriate sessions. The evaluation lesson helps us determine if your child is ready — and what "ready" looks like is different for every kid.
Do I need any experience to start?
None at all. Many of our favorite students walked in never having touched an instrument. Your evaluation lesson lets us see where you are and build a plan from there.
How much do lessons cost?
Lesson pricing depends on duration and frequency — we offer flexible options to fit different budgets and schedules. Contact us at 470-789-2422 or through our contact form and we will walk you through what makes sense for your situation.
Are private lessons necessary for GMEA and school auditions?
Students who supplement school rehearsals with weekly private lessons consistently outperform those who rely on classroom instruction alone. For GMEA All-State, LGPE, and youth orchestra auditions, private coaching on scales, excerpts, and sight-reading makes a measurable difference.
Do you offer group lessons?
Yes — after your private instructor evaluates your readiness. Group ensembles are more effective once individual technique is solid, and they are also where some of the most fun happens. Students who play with peers tend to practice more and stick with their instrument longer.
