🔊 Piano Drone
Sustain any note for intonation practice and ear training
What is a Piano Drone?
A drone sustains a single pitch continuously, giving you a steady harmonic reference to practice against. It's one of the most effective tools for developing intonation — the accuracy of your pitch while playing. Unlike a tuner which tells you if a single note is in tune, a drone lets you hear harmonic relationships in real time as you play scales, intervals, and melodies.
How to Practice with a Drone
Select the tonic note of the key you're practicing and let it ring. Play your scales or musical passages on top of it. When your notes are perfectly in tune, the "beats" (the wavering quality of slightly mismatched pitches) disappear and the sound locks together. This is especially valuable for violin, viola, and voice — instruments where intonation is entirely controlled by the player.
