🎼 Note Identification
Read notes on the staff — treble, bass, alto, tenor and more clefs.
Master Note Reading with Interactive Staff Training
Note identification is one of the most fundamental skills in music education. Whether you're studying violin, piano, guitar, or voice, being able to read notes fluently on the staff transforms you from someone who learns music by ear into a complete, versatile musician. This free tool lets you practice identifying notes on the treble, bass, alto, tenor, soprano, mezzo-soprano, and baritone clefs — the same clefs used in real sheet music and orchestral scores.
How to Use This Exercise
Select your clef at the top, customize the difficulty using the settings panel, then identify the note shown on the staff. You can answer using the letter buttons or by clicking the highlighted key on the piano keyboard below. After 3 incorrect attempts, the correct answer is revealed and you move on — this keeps the session flowing without frustration. Track your score, errors, and streak as you practice.
Which Clef Should You Learn?
Treble clef is used by violin, guitar, piano (right hand), flute, and most vocal parts. Bass clef is used by cello, bass guitar, piano (left hand), and trombone. Alto clef is the primary clef for viola — if you study viola at Soul Music Lessons, mastering the alto clef is essential. Tenor clef appears in advanced cello and trombone parts. The soprano, mezzo-soprano, and baritone clefs appear in historical scores and advanced choral music.
