How to Use This Online Metronome
Set your BPM with the slider or ±1/±10 buttons. Use Tap Tempo to match a song's speed — tap 4+ times in rhythm. Pick your time signature, subdivision, and sound type, then hit play. Press Spacebar to play/pause hands-free.
Subdivisions Explained
Quarter note — one click per beat, the standard for most practice. Eighth notes — two clicks per beat, great for faster passages. Triplets — three per beat, essential for blues and swing feels. Sixteenth notes — four per beat for highly detailed rhythmic work. Dotted eighth — creates the lilting, syncopated feel found in compound meters and swing.
How to Practice Effectively with a Metronome
The most common mistake musicians make is practicing too fast, too soon. Always start at a tempo where you can play a passage cleanly — even if that means 60 BPM on something that should eventually be 140. Increase by 5 BPM only after you can play the passage correctly three times in a row at the current tempo. This method builds genuine technical progress rather than reinforcing mistakes.
Use the time signature setting to match your piece — 3/4 for waltzes and minuets, 6/8 for compound time, 5/4 and 7/8 for more advanced contemporary repertoire. The No Emphasis toggle removes the accent on beat 1, which is a great intermediate drill to develop your own internal pulse without relying on the downbeat cue.
