What is a Chord?
A chord is three or more notes played simultaneously. Chords form the harmonic foundation of music — the "background" that melodies sit on top of. Understanding chords helps you read lead sheets, accompany other musicians, write songs, and improvise more musically.
The Most Important Chords to Learn First
Major chords sound happy and stable. Minor chords sound sad or introspective. These two chord types form the basis of virtually all popular music. Once you're comfortable with those, explore 7th chords — they add color and sophistication, and are essential for jazz, blues, and R&B.
Chord Theory Basics
Every chord is built by stacking intervals above a root note. A major chord stacks a major 3rd (4 semitones) and then a minor 3rd (3 semitones) on top. A minor chord reverses this — minor 3rd first, then major 3rd. This simple principle generates all the chord types you see above.
