A complete reference chart of every note on the piano keyboard, designed for students who are still learning to identify keys. Print this out and keep it next to your piano so you can look up any note when you forget.
What this chart shows
This reference covers all 88 keys on a standard piano: 52 white keys (A through G, repeating across seven octaves) and 36 black keys (the sharps and flats between them). Each key is labeled with its note name and octave number so you can find any specific pitch quickly.
Who this is for
This chart is most useful for:
- Beginner piano students in their first 6–12 months of lessons
- Adult learners returning to piano after time away
- Parents helping young children practice at home
- Music theory students who want a visual reference for octave numbering
- Students transitioning between instruments who need a piano keyboard map
How to use it at the piano
Print the PDF and tape it to your music stand or to the wall behind your piano. When you encounter an unfamiliar note in your sheet music, glance at the chart to identify which key to press. Most students find they stop needing the reference within 3–4 months of consistent practice.
For sight-reading practice, cover part of the chart with paper and try to name the notes from memory — gradually expand the covered area as you improve.
Octave numbering explained
Piano notes use a numbering system where middle C is called C4. The C just below middle C is C3, and the C above middle C is C5. The lowest note on a standard piano is A0 and the highest is C8. This same numbering is used in music software, MIDI, and most modern method books.
